You don't sit until they do, then they will direct you to do so also.
While assertiveness is a good job quality, politeness and deference to authority (especially as a first impression ) takes precedent in this situation. The assertiveness aspect can be brought out later in other ways.
Good question and Good luck.

Generally, the interviewer himself/herself asks u to sit down. But, even if he doesn't and is busy in looking at ur profile or something, I guess u should ask, u'll make a good impression of an honest and good person but maybe bot of a smart person in case the interviwer feels that u overdid it. But definitely, it's better to look like an honest person rather than ur action being considered as rude and u losing out on an important job.

I've never heard of a edquitte "clause" for that. I would ask before sitting out of respect. Otherwise, you appear to be like the Texas girl in Tennessee Williams' play "A Couple Of White Chicks Just Sittin' Around Talkin'"...you just barge in and make yourself at home.

i have done many interviews, and i have always asked the person to be irterviewed,to have a seat.ithink a person who just takes a seat,is assuming to much.i think it would be more professional and curtious, to wait for an inventation to be seated .also it goes a long way in an interview, if you couldget a little positive info on the company you are applying to. it shows that you are interested in the job

if u sit before they even suggest it, it may give an impression of u being haughty , impolite and lack of office etiquette.
so wait till u r asked to sit.
politeness and general way of how u carry urself carries marks too in an interview.
good luck
