It goes with the territory. When your ego is so fragile you have to believe in a complete fiction to convince yourself that you are better than the poor, uninformed masses, bigotry is the natural next step.

Well, i'm not religious, or a biggot, but I still think that's an unfair generalization. Maybe it would work if you said most biggots are religious. Not a two-way street (not logically interchangeable); however, this only implies correlation, either direct or indirect.

I think that you have to limit that to the fanatics. Folks that are truly religious are tolerant and giving. The hypocrites however are trying to raise themselves by putting others down. A Gandhi or Mother Teresa Are not bigoted but Jerry Falwell and his ilk can only make money by trying to prove that their beliefs are best and should be supported. There are very few truly religious people.

They aren't. Perhaps some bigots consider themselves to be religious, but I've always wondered how members of the KKK can call themselves Christians when their beliefs are CLEARLY against Jesus's teachings.
I am a Christian. I am NOT a bigot. I don't consider anyone to be worth more or less than anyone else. Sure, I see some things as sinful, but it doesn't mean I hate people who sin.
I love everyone, even people who hate Christians.

To be a bigot one must have an unreasonable or unsubstantiated prejudice of extreme poportion. Therefore I believe that mankind in general and americans in particular are all bigots. Religious and non-religious. This answer not being bigoted as the replies between religious and non-religious are overwhelmingly sarcastic, hateful and extreme and unreasonable. Case in point, this question and answers. According to your own answers most of you are bigots.

Bigots base their biases on beliefs (personal viewpoints) and not facts... Religion is based upon faith (a belief system) and not facts... thus the connection through similar approaches. Ever notice how few scientists are bigoted? Now you know why.

...Bigot, noun: One who is strongly partial to one's own group, religion, race, or politics and is intolerant of those who differ.
...Looks like there are more bigots running around than just religious people.
...It sounds like you, sir, are intolerant of religious people, which of course is your privilege. You can decide if you yourself are in the same ball league as those you classify as "bigots".
...I honestly don't know most religious people, but I would say people in general have prejudices and preferences - what is so unusual about that?
...In John 8:45-46, the Lord Jesus Christ, as our example, can say,
..45 "But because I speak the truth, you do not believe Me [do not trust Me, do not rely on Me, or adhere to Me].
...46 Who of you convicts Me of wrongdoing or finds Me guilty of sin? Then if I speak truth, why do you not believe Me [trust Me, rely on, and adhere to Me]?" - and no one could.
...The point is, you can find sins, weakness, prejudice, intolerance, and hypocrisy in anyone's life, but our example is the Lord Jesus Christ, and you can find no fault in Him.
...I urge everyone to trust in the Lord Jesus Christ and be saved. Acts 16:31
...Whosoever will, may come.

Obviously because most religious creeds actively encourage intolerance for the beliefs of others.

[2:75] Then your hearts became hardened after that, till they were like stones or harder still; for of stones there are some out of which gush forth streams, and of them there are some out of which flows water when they cleave asunder. And indeed of them are some that humble themselves for the fear of God. And God is not unmindful of what you do.
