Aside from taking an analgesic, is there anything I can do to prevent that? Will it get better if I push through the pain?

This is not muscle pain, it is joint pain, like a tendonitis or something. I don't have it except when I do weights, even if its something light like 3 lbs.

Does it hurt like when you lay an egg? or is the pain different?

No. Do not push yourself. Start off with lighter weight, whether you can handle the larger amount or not. Your muscles have probably gotten used to not working out and aren't ready to just pick up where you left off. Also, work out in small portions and gradually increase every day. Just give your body some time to adapt and get back into the rhythm of things.

I have what sounds like the same problem. I try to lift my weights and the pain is winning. Usually I just give up and come back over here and exercise my fingers.
