Most dams provide low cost power, flood control, hold water supply in resevoir, and can also provide a lake for fishing and recreation. Disadvantages are high initial cost, loss of land under water, and possibly loss of some animals habitat due to flooding lake.

Well, large multipurpose dams are considered a huge headache.
Firstly, their construction sometimes requires deforestation and inundation of various communities living in that region.
Then, if the water upstream is dammed, the water downstream may become scarce and unreliable. Also, the lake containing the dammed water may become eutrophicated and become a breeding place for vrious vectors of diseases cause the water remains largely stagnant. Also, large dams are thought to cause earthquakes. eg. the Koyna region in Maharashtra(India).
But, hydroelectricity is a non-polluting source of energy and pretty viable cause their are loads of rivers having rapids and waterfalls. It's being considered as one of the future prominent sources of energy.

A very good source of non polluting power which the environmentalist have managed to almost stop.
