The most common symptom of gallstones is pain in the stomach area or in the upper right part of the belly, under the ribs.
The pain may:
Develop suddenly in the center of the upper belly (epigastric area) and spread to the right upper back or shoulder blade area. It is usually hard to get comfortable; moving around does not make the pain go away.
Prevent you from taking normal or deep breaths.
Last 15 minutes to 24 hours; 1 to 5 hours of continuous pain is common.
Begin at night and be severe enough to wake you.
Occur after meals.
Gallstone pain can cause vomiting, which may relieve some of the belly (abdominal) pain and pressure. Pain that occurs with a fever, nausea, and vomiting or loss of appetite may be a sign of inflammation or infection of the gallbladder (acute cholecystitis). Symptoms that may mean that a gallstone is blocking the common bile duct include:
Yellowing of the skin and the white part of the eyes (jaundice).
Dark urine.
Light-colored stools.
A fever and chills.

Symptoms of gallstones are often called a gallstone "attack" because they occur suddenly.
An attack may cause:
- pain in the upper abdomen that increases rapidly and lasts from 30 minutes to several hours
- pain in the back between the shoulder blades
- pain under the right shoulder
- nausea or vomiting
Gallstone attacks often follow fatty meals, they may also occur during the night.
Other symptoms include
- abdominal bloating
- recurring intolerance of fatty foods
- colic
- belching
- gas
- indigestion
If you have these symptoms, or are still worried then make an appointment with your GP. They may refer you for an abdominal ultrasound, to be on the safe side.
Best of luck, Mel.

hi i had gallstones for 4 years before they were diagnosed last january......the pain is absolutely excrutiating on your side if you eat something high in fat it can cause the pain to start up sometimes accompanied with the pain i would get the feeling of being really hot and clamy and nothing you can do will ease it.......in some cases when i had a bout of pain it is actually worse than labour pain..........i was rushed in last january with the pain and vomiting blood(dont think thats is a symptom of gallstones)i just tried to make myself sick hoping that would somehow ease it the gave me a high dose of morphine to try and ease it but the pain was still there although not as intense, they then gave me an ultrasound and found i had several if not hundreds of gallstones, but apparently gallstones dont usually give you any symptoms or problems unless there is an infection which is what i had i was also vomiting bile(green stuff). they kept me in for a week on a free fluid diet on an iv and iv antibiotics, but they will not operate you when you have an infection as there is a risk of infecting other organs when they remove your gallbladder....i was told i would have to wait 3 to 6 months but to change my diet completely and i mean everything no fat .i than had me gallbladder removed 10th may last year by keyhole surgery and was home by the next day it was painful after i had it removed but have had no problems since and it is heaven (except when i try to cheat and have some chocolate i can get the same sort of pain as the gallbladder is there for a reason the bile helps to digest the food and once there is no gallbladder it is harder for your body to digest the fat.................... sorry about the essay i hope it helps somewhat,if in doubt next time you have severe pain go to a&e and tell them you think it gallstones and they will take it from there................dont leave it to long as it just too bloody painful to put up with

pain from gall stones generally speaking happens at night when you have drifted off to sleep it is also triggered by eating fatty foods. the pain is normally located on the right side under the ribs but can vary from person to person. the pain can build up to a crescendo and last for quite a while until dying off. if the pain persists then it may be something like colicystitis, which is where a stone from the gall bladder has been lodged in a bile duct. if you think you are suffering from gall stones then you should visit your GP and get an ultra sound scan to confirm it is that.

Severe, sometimes sickening colicky pain under the ribs on the right. This may come and go, it is often triggered off by a fatty meal. If the ducts become obstructed patient may become jaundiced. There is also a risk of ascending cholangitis, in which case the patient becomes feverish and secondary pancreatitis.
If you have abdominal pain like this avoid fats and see your GP.

acute pain in the right flank, below the ribs. Vomitting. This can last for a few minutes or for hours, depending on the stones and the patients ability to cope with such pain.
Stay away from fatty food, dairy products etc. seek the help of a doctor.

a terrible pain right hand side just below the top of the bottom rib !! if they disperse the pain goes around your body slowly untill they are flushed (normally several hours) the first pain is because the gallbladder is pushing out a stone and it gets stuck!!!

I'm a nurse. A person could have many symptoms, but you could experience adbominal pain, vomiting, fever, to only minor stomach discomfort. I would see a doctor to confirm. Take care.
