Cost per square foot is anything but average. I have been in the construction industry as an estimator, purchasing manager and now I work in a building department and I have seen construction prices in central Florida from $75 to over $150 a square foot.

If you are looking for a solid nationwide standard try the International Code Council. Most states (in the U.S.) abide by their own adopted version of the International Building Code and those respective building departments calculate valuations for permit fees and tax purposes. And again most base those calculations on a table that is revised every six months by the ICC. You can find the latest valuation table at the link I provided below. Good luck!

I'm not sure really Its either something like $16 or it might be as high as $60 but it depends on how much you are welling to spend.

I do know that if you need to scale drawing to get a building permite for if you are building additions, a residential designer will charge between $1.00 a square foot to $1.50 a square foot. Don't go to a Architect they charge 20% of how much you spent which could be a lot.

Please note that all my prices are based in the North Carolina area. your price could change depends on where you live and what lumber and materials you use.

In NC 100 per square foot is about average. Building-cost.net is a great site for you. It has features where you can tell what you want and it will give a print out on all aspects so you can see what each part will cost. Hope this helps.

In Canada, builder go as low as $40 per sq foot, per home. If they do at least 40 homes or so.

$40 for just the basics.
$70 for more high end stuff, or even custom work.

Not sure about US.
