Does anybody know what free download I could use to convert my VOB files into files that will play on Windows Video maker.

usually all you can find on the net are trialwares with limitations.either crippled wares - 5 minute conversions or time limited software.but if you do get your hands on a complete software with a trial period,you can try getting a serial number from here -

AutoGK is excellent. It converts VOB to AVI format, which can be played in most media players, including WMP. It's freeware and you can find it here: http://www.autogk.me.uk/
I've been using it for years to back up my DVD collection, and it's never let me down.
