Hollywood is fast becoming a family tourist trap.
Ten years ago it wasn't much more than a nasty dangerous place to be (strip joints, drugs, and homeless people), not at all as people think it is...
Over the last few years that section of LA has been cleaning up its act with the new Kodak theater, new malls and such, its fast becoming another big mall, sanitized and fun for the family/tourist with $$ to spend.
But like others have stated, there is almost nothing here that has anything to do with the movies anymore (excepting Mann's Chinese Theater and whats left of the wax museum).
There are a lot of shops that sell movie posters, scripts, t-shirts, movie memorabilia and the like, a lot of newer & trendy clothing stores, coffeshops, etc., but don't expect to see any "movie stars" or famous people here.
Other than the walk of fame (the stars on the sidewalk), if you want to see famous people, you'd have a better chance of that in nearby Beverly Hills on Rodeo Dr. or just a few blocks down on Sunset Blvd (Sunset Strip).
If you want the "Hollywood movie" experience, go to Universal Studios/Citywalk for a tour...

Previous posters got it all.
Most visitors find they are disappointed by Hollywood. It's not as glamorous as people think it is. It's touristy, dirty and not unlike Time Square was a few years ago. It's true, they've revitalized the area.
It's no place you'd want to live either, except in the pricey homes in the hills.
Many people who haven't been here think LA is Hollywood and everything you see on TV. In truth, there is SOOOO much more to the city that many people don't appreciate (Lois.)
And I'm tired of people calling us all shallow. MOST of use are just average, working-class Joe's just like everywhere else.
Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to get back to looking at myself in the mirror.

Hollywood itself is GHETTO!
Lots of homeless people, you will get asked for spare change every 10 feet. The streets are dirty. Lots of tourists too, which is why all the bums are there. There are some interesting things to see though. But it is NOTHING like people expect. There are no movie stars to see in Hollywood.
