People just cannot be bothered with their kids anymore, I don't know whereabouts you are living, (I'm in W.Glam) but around here, even small kids are wandering around on weekends, holidays from 8am to after 9pm, with not a peep from the parent (s). No wonder pervs can snatch them up so easy.
If the parents don't care enough to have the kids watched over, you can imagine what happens when the kids ARE at home...
I have four children, and make DAMN sure they are reading, practising writing at weekends and do their homework to be handed in. Don't get me wrong, I don't FORCE them, but I know they all enjoy what they do, and when we have free time we ALL go out and make the most of it, as I hate them going out on their own with their friends or otherwise.
I DO let them go out and spend a lot of time 'net twitching' to make sure they're OK!
But as far as parents not talking to the kids, I have seen enough of that. I feel sorry for the kids who ask a question, or try and chat and get yelled at "lemme alone, shurrup, get out an play"
They grow up feeling like their not 'worth' bothering with and get defensive and aggressive.
Some parents really make me sick.

Not just a british problem. Alot of kids here in the US can't identify states, don't know the capital of the state they live in or even know some of the basic facts of history (i.e. confuse the Civil War with the Revolutionary War). Its ridiculous. And its not just the parents fault. Kids go to school for a reason but apparently its for anything but learning. The US is going to end up with an entire generation of people like George W. Bush (he's the king of all retards).

I have a friend who can't spell worth a crap, knows very little about how our government is organized and knows nothing about history. A real wiz at math though. I suck at math but know enough to get me through but I certainly know alot more about the other things. Even some basic common knowledge stuff escapes him. Its no wonder he is a walking disaster. This world is in for tough times because of the lack of education it's younger citizens are getting.

I think that parent's don't have the time, and the effort to answer to a child.
I always give an answer to my children, and if i don't know it i look on the books or Internet.
Children don't read books, they are in the Internet, PlayStation, messenger, TV etc. and at there schools the teachers don't care any more.
The most of them they care about the money they earn.
And not what they provide to our children.
As the years go by i found more difficult to find good schools and with a reputation that the children learn something.

my mum was able to stay at home until I was about 8yrs,she had time to show us what she was cooking and let us try it out.
I am at home now with my kids and I try to include them in the kitchen so that they know what an egg is etc but I'm lucky most family's have both parents working and do not have the time to spare.
My kids primary school was built without a kitchen how are the staff going to teach cookery? It's a lesson that is slowly being dropped for other things,so why expect our children to know anything different.

This is all put down to when we take the kids shopping everything is packaged and they don't know where the stuff comes from,
When i was younger my mum shopped at the butchers where you actually saw the meat ,like the fishmongers where you got to see the fish,We lived near a farm and got fresh veg, milk and eggs from there, so i knew where all my food came from.
Parents always put this type of thing down to their kids education the schools should be teaching them ,My kids know where there food comes from and know the names of some fruits that adults wouldn't even eat .

Those must be some pretty damn big eggs...

Apparently most of British children don't know that London is the capital of England. I have also read that (don't quote me on this one) about 5% of British school children can't read at a pre-teen age. How do they pass their exams or study at school if they can't even read?

In a first world country there really can't be an excuse for this.

British children are far more intelligent than sky news gives them credit for except for the fact that their parents allow them to watch sky news.

I wonder how they phrased the questions. Kids can be so cheeky. Towny kids are more likely to give you a silly, wise crack, answer. "Oh yeah, cows lay eggs and hens make milk." wink wink ;-)

Who's testing who here? God, I hope they aren't that thick.

A visit to a children's farm might help, could be made compulsory by the education department.

These children don't have too many brains but they would make a nice steak to go with the eggs.
