i doubt it does but i need some factual evidence to support this.

No, it doesn't, but it still uses power, better to switch it off.

What sort of "factual evidence" would you like? Only way I can think to do that would be to put an ammeter on the AC feeding the TV. Generally the standby circuits use way less power, usually the only thing running is a 5 volt supply for the IR receiver, so when you point a remote at it and press the ON button, it will come on.

An average 20" screen television will consume 70-80W in operation. In standby this goes down to around 8W because all of the high consumption circuitry e.g. the picture circuitry is turned off. The only way to prove this conclusively is with a multimeter to measure the current consumed by the TV in both modes.

No! but only by a fraction. All the components are powered up inside ready to work when the littel red/green/blue light is on, the on button just diverts the power to the tuner. So for all intents and puposes any electrical appliance (TV/HiFi/video) uses as much power when on standby as when it is working.

It doesn't consume as much electricity, No, but it is still useing vast amounts, obviously the amount various by TV but it uses around 2/3s as much energy on Stand by.

no it is the current draw to illuminate the screen which does the damage but standby costs too!.

It doesn't at all - power is still being used though, so you are better turning it off completely - better for the environment, better for your electricity bill :-)
