1- Learn some Latin : French was called Latin vulgair, meaning Vulgar Latin.
2- Take French Classes preferrably from Alliance Francaise up to Intermediate level.
3- Try ways of spending at least 6 months in France after constructing a base as mentioned in 2.
You can pick up a language quickly if you know the basics of it. This is true especially for adults, for kids though (up to 10) classes are futile to quicken the process.

Alliance Francaise is great! Alternatively, spend some time in a French-speaking country!

Alliance Francaise is the best option, u'll learn the proper way and u get certificates after u finish the stages/tests.
