In a panflet recently recieved through the door. They state that they don't like to get the recyclable easte in carier bags, as they have to remove the bags and discard them, to get to the waste. But if you leave the stuff loose in the grey box, the wind catches some of it, and it blows around the streets. It looks very untidy. They say it is posible to recycle the bags, at the supermarket. So why don't they do that?
Any thoughts?

Our council lets us put our recycling in carrier bags within the recycling box. I do this as I think it actually makes it easier for them. They can tip a bag of cans, then a bag of newspapers onto the truck; I leave the glass loose in the bottom of the box and they just tip that in last.
Some of my neighbours don't do this, and I see the guys spending ages, going through the boxes picking out the cans, papers blowing everywhere. They put the carrier bags under or in the box when they've finished. No problem. I would contact your council and ask them what they propose to do about the mess that is going to follow if they insist on no bags.

A couple of things...

First- if your recyclables are blowing around when the wind catches them the solution (instead of carrier bags.) is to Tie them up with jute string. It actually makes the paper and cardboard easier to handle and keeps it looking nice no matter what the weather.

Second--the plastic that your carrier bags are made of is different from the standard recyclable plastics. to recycle the carrier bags is far more difficult and only because there is no market out side the retail industry the supermarkets have organized a program to recycle through the manufactures. seems weird I know but the plastic is just not pure enough for conventional recycling.

And lastly (I know I said a couple)--- Thanks for recycling.

the reason the bags are recyclable at a supermarket is that the supermarket pays but it might not be economically viable by the council.

If you dont tie the carrier bagsa this should be ok as they can tip it out and leave the bag in the bog when they are done, this is what i do. You could also contact the council for their advise and you might be able to go about getting a lid for your box to keep it all enclosed in your box.

My council also suggests that you place reycling out on the morning of collection to avoid it blowing around. i know this might be an inconvenience...it is for me when i rush to work but it might help?!

it can be frustrating with all the council systems they put in place and keeping up to date....good luck!!!
