In these last years the weather (and the temperatures too) are absolutely unpredictable. In summer we have rain and low temperature, in winter we don't need to wear heavy coats since it's too warm. However I guess early May it's still cold to swim into the Garda lake. As a rule the temperature should still be rather chilly and the water of the lake further cooled from the incoming mountain streams bringing snows thaw.
Past stats say that by end of May the average air temperature had been 22°/23° C ( abt. 72° F) while the water's average temperature had been around 17/18° (abt. 63° F).
So I suggest you to pack yr bikini (also because is takes a small room of yr suitcase) but expect just sunbathing in the warmest hours of the day.

i live near the LAGO di GARDA but, I can't use my bikini in may.
This year may be it will be possible 'cause we had also a warm winter.
Anyway... I had a Russian friend who used her bikini in Lake of Garda at the end of September!!!!!

It could be hit or miss. I would definitely pack it, but there's no guarantee you'll get to put it on. In mid-March 2005, Northern Italy warmed up so much that people were suntanning in their bathing suits anywhere there was grass! The next year it was a lot colder through late spring.
