What is the farthest distance a 10 year old should run in a school competition?

Though we were doing 2.5 mile run when I was that age across country.

But then we ate coal and went to school 17 hours a day before going up Chimney to earn dripping sandwich and a shilling.

I've seen 10 year olds run 5k races before, but thats about the limit I would let them run.

as long as he can do it for... usually about 2.5kms but it is up to him
