It takes a lot of work may take years. All this people said 3 to 5 months, but I believe that is impossible to learn some thing that even for americans takes years, in only a few months. All the words, pronunciations and grammar, plus the most difficult think modified you accent. I believed that in a few months you can reach a good level of communication but thats it; all the other things mention above are going to take you years to master them.

Define "correctly." Define "basic." The truth of the matter is that many people who are native first language speakers and who have been speaking English for all of their lives still aren't speaking it with what is considered to be correct grammar and form, though they do manage to get their meanings across.

it will depend on what your native language is.. for example, some languages have different sentence structures compared to english so beginners usually have a lot of trouble with their grammar.
but less than two months of frequent study and practice should be enough for the basics.. (:

I was born into the English speaking language, and I still can't do it. You have this bough and bough that is prounced bow and bough, and rough, (sounds like row) prounced like bough (sounds like bowel) not bow. Then you have these other words. spelled the same but prounced different, and well it's confusing the English language is! And those spelled differnt and have the same meanings.
