They're still waiting for a Messiah to come along. Should Jesus return today, what proof, if any, would they find acceptable that would change their minds that he wasn't able to offer back then? Is there a certain criteria he has to meet (lifestyle, grooming, something else?) to fit the bill?

Since Jesus did not meet the criteria, does that mean he pulled the wool over everyone's eyes or were his followers responsible for that?

If someone shows up to fulfill the real requirements of a Messiah, we will buy it. So far, I don't see a peaceful planet, and that's just one of the myriad things not met by jesus..

According to Rabbi Hyman G. Enelow, “The ideas associated in the Jewish mind with the Messiah . . . were left unrealized by Jesus.” So, simply stated, Jesus was not largely accepted because he did not fulfill the popular expectations.
The prophet Isaiah described the Messiah as a future king who would establish everlasting peace, justice and righteousness. Scriptural prophecies such as this helped to shape the expectations of the Jews. Since the Messiah was to be king over Israel, whatever Gentile government held dominion over Israel at the time of his appearance could be expected to relinquish its sovereignty.
It is apparent, therefore, that the Jews of the first century did not have the later concept of a suffering or dying Messiah. In fact, Jewish scholar Joseph Klausner concluded: “The whole idea of a Messiah who should be put to death was one which, in Jesus’ time, was impossible of comprehension . . . to the Jews.” Even those few Jews who believed Jesus to be the Messiah did not expect that he would suffer or be put to death.—Matthew 16:21, 22.

Hence, whoever might have been attracted by Jesus’ teachings would certainly have been disturbed by the fact that Jesus did not overthrow the Roman government and rule as king over Israel but was, instead, executed by that Roman government. As Klausner explained, “The crucified Jesus was a disappointment to most of those who followed him in life.”
However, Jesus’ disciples understood the Kingdom to be an actual government of God, though they did not comprehend the reach of its domain. Nathanael said to Jesus: “Rabbi, you are the Son of God, you are King of Israel.” (Joh 1:49) They knew the things foretold about “the holy ones” in the prophecy of Daniel. (Da 7:18, 27) Jesus directly promised his apostolic followers that they would occupy “thrones.” (Mt 19:28) James and John sought certain privileged positions in the Messianic government, and Jesus acknowledged that there would be such privileged positions, but he stated that the assigning of these rested with his Father, the Sovereign Ruler. (Mt 20:20-23; Mr 10:35-40) So, whereas his disciples mistakenly limited Messiah’s kingly rule to earth and specifically to fleshly Israel, they later correctly understood that it referred to a heavenly governmental arrangement, the very Kingdom that we ask for in the "Lords Prayer".

They chose to turn their backs on God. Read Revelation there will be 144,000 sealed that are Jews. Satan knows who God is and He trembles. He has blinded people to the truth. They will turn around, but there will be many that don't believe even when He comes back for His people. Satan knows that the Jews were the chosen ones. They didn't obey God to keep separate from the people that followed idols. They wanted to be like everyone else, and in so doing they became blind to the truth. Jesus is the true Messiah. There are some Jews who do believe. They are not allowed to read the whole Bible to find out the truth. They are only allowed the old testament, and Psalms they don't get to read the N.T. Then again the priest are the ones who controls what is read.

>>If Jesus' followers believed he was the promised Messiah, why does the general Jewish population not agree?<<

God has blinded them for the sake of the Gentiles. He will eventually lift the veil and they will recognize Jesus. Read Romans.

"I want you to understand this mystery, brethren: a hardening has come upon part of Israel, until the full number of the Gentiles come in, and so all Israel will be saved" (Romans 11:25-26).

The jewish people understand better than most christians about the kingdom of heaven. The hebrew, since abraham, have been waiting for the establishment of that kingdom on earth and the annointed of Father God as king. They do not believe as I do that Jesus of Nazareth is that king. That Jesus Christ is king to the glory of God the Father. They are still waiting for Him to appear. I am waiting for Him to come back.

The Bible outlines very specific jobs that the Messiah will accomplish. Jesus did not do any of these jobs... noone yet through history has.

This verse concerning a false prophet with wounded hands that comes back at the time of the true Messiah might refer to Jesus:

Zechariah 13:1 In that day there shall be a fountain opened to the house of David and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem for sin and for uncleanness. [2] And it shall come to pass in that day, saith the LORD of hosts, [that] I will cut off the names of the idols out of the land, and they shall no more be remembered: and also I will cause the prophets and the unclean spirit to pass out of the land. [3] And it shall come to pass, [that] when any shall yet prophesy, then his father and his mother that begat him shall say unto him, Thou shalt not live; for thou speakest lies in the name of the LORD: and his father and his mother that begat him shall thrust him through when he prophesieth. [4] And it shall come to pass in that day, [that] the prophets shall be ashamed every one of his vision, when he hath prophesied; neither shall they wear a rough garment to deceive: [5] But he shall say, I [AM] NO PROPHET, I [am] an husbandman; for man taught me to keep cattle from my youth. [6] And [one] shall say unto him, What [are] these wounds in thine hands? Then he shall answer, [Those] with which I was wounded [in] the house of my friends. (KJV)

If they had agreed the prophecies would not have been fulfilled.
