First off, come clean and tell him that you're sorry, but you don't have the same feelings for him. Tell him that you just didn't know what to say and that is what came out, but that you don't feel that way.
It may be that the distance is getting in the way of you developing stronger feelings for him - probably self-preservation. If this is the case, is moving closer an option? If not, then it might be best to end this relationship and find someone closer to home.
Your sadness is probably just loneliness, but you might also be suffering from mild depression. You might want to talk with a counselor.

I hate to say this, but long-distance relationships are hard even when you ARE sure you love each other. I know you had the best of intentions when you said you loved him back--and I've done that before, myself. But if you aren't certain, I really think you should tell him. And while you don't have to stop seeing each other altogether, I would suggest "taking a break" to see other people. Life is way too short to spend it in a relationship that doesn't make you happy, and maybe this way you'll find one that does. Good luck.

Let things go. He's far away and it will be easier on him than if you were close. He cares about you just too much to be just friends at the moment. Give it time and maybe you can build a friendship up again.

I'd get out of there if I was you your not happy, and that's what is important, let him down gently just tell him you can't handle the distance and get out there and find someone who makes you happy, you deserve it, hope all goes well good luck

I feel that you shouldn't keep on going with the relationship if you don't love him you might hurt him and yourself.. but also you must communicate tell him about how you feel.
