Give up something very important to you, that you do all the time, as a personal sacrifice. It has to be big, and it has to not serve an ulterior purpose.

as a dues paying Lutheran i miss most or all of the Lent services during the week and I am lucky to go to the regular services on Sunday if I am sick or feel like sleeping in...I am not a fanatic...just don't believe in depriving myself for fourty days of anything..its not the way I believe..never has and probably never will be...most of these laws are man made.
