I have 2 cats,coco(female),casper(male)... about same age 1hlf yrs, coco ive had since she was a kitten and brought casper in as a stray 3/4 months ago had them both done at the vets so no kittens and spraying. Coco just hates casper she is really mean and screams if he comes one bit close to her shes gone really nasty and growls all the time and runs away when she hears him he meows at her being nice, but he is the friendlier cat out of the two she is a bit more wild and is only nice when she wants to be. The growling hissing has been going on ever since we brought him into the house ive tried everything, putting them in the same room and spraying her with water when shes bad doesnt work ive tried tapping her on her nose at other times and she gets worse and even when shes outside she growls and runs off she sits upstairs all day now and doesnt come down unless shes feeling brave i have give up now and ran out of ideas what to do does any1 have any different suggestions?ty 4 the help

just to add coco did like other cats she used to play with other cats and get along fine(always jumping on them) and has had a litter before being spayed the litter wasnt to casper as soon as i brought casper into the house i had them both done so i dont no if it is just him and she feels threatened he is a much bigger cat and has full long hair shes a bit smaller than him and is a semi long haired cat she is such a cow i just want them to get along but looks like it will never happen. Also casper does chase her sometimes if she does run but they never attack each other it comes to a stand still and coco just ends up running away and casper looks really worried and walks away slowly but he tries to be nice to her by meowing but she has none of it but sometimes he can provoke her he normally stays downstairs with his food and she is upstairs with her food and bed with her evil face shesonly nice when she wants to be lol

All I can say is just give them time, I have the same problem and despite what the vets will tell you all the neutering in the world does not stop spraying, and they still know when the mating season is like about now. The behaviour is far worse during March and April. I have 4, all rescue 2 girls 2 boys. They alway find their own hierachy after a while, and they will find their own space within the house, which they will make their own, my youngest cat who is a she lives upstairs a lot of the time,
I think your problem is that they havent decided who is boss as yet, as soon as they do you should be fine.

They don't hate one another. Coco is very afraid - she thinks that Casper is going to drive her away from her home and everything she loves. Cats have to learn to share a home, as they wouldn't do that easily if they lived in the wild, so they need a LOT of time and patience from you to help them understand that they can both live together.
The best way to start introducing a new cat is to keep the two separate at first, letting them see one another for a short time each day but feeding them separately and keeping them in different rooms at night. They like to keep a distance between them at first, and will hiss and growl to stop the other cat coming too close.
Coco doesn't understand that Casper wants to play, so everything she's doing is done to try and keep herself safe from him. Don't treat this as if she is doing something wrong - talk to her quietly, reassure her and pet her when you're near her. Make sure she has her own food, drink and litter tray somewhere where she feels safe - put them upstairs for now, as she seems to think this is a safe place for her. She needs to learn that Casper isn't a threat and that you are still giving her the things she needs.
It can help if you stroke Casper then go straight to Coco and stroke her, too - it helps her get used to Casper's scent and to associate it with something nice (you petting her).
Read the advice on these links - http://community.ashdown.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=115&hl=introducing
Search for "introducing a new cat" on some cat sites on the Web, for more suggestions - Cat World's site is pretty good for advice on all sorts of cat problems, too (http://www.catworld.co.uk)
You can still get them to live togehter but you must be patient, and try to think like a frightened cat! Remember, Coco is showing she is afraid, she isn't doing something naughty and she doesn't hate Casper. It could take a long time, but keep calm and talk quietly to them as much as you can, to help them both feel loved and wanted.

Give this time, a long time, always feed them at the same time and play with them at the same time. make sure you have 2 litter trays and I know it is not easy, but keep them clean. Yes, your cat will learn to love it's new family member. Just don't be mean to her for hissing or being a brat towards the new member of the family, make sure that the older resident cat is still the queen bee. This helps. I had this p[roblem too, this is the first time I had a cat that took nearly forever for her to accept the new one. She will play with him but she hisses when she does it, but that is how she is, and the younger one is much stronger that the older resident cat. Good Luck, and thanks for taking a cat in.

The only thing i can say is tat i have two female cats and got them around the same time, so that they would be used to each other. i should be so lucky ! ! ! they hate each other. They give each other dirty looks when the other one walks past and if they get to close to each other they have a bit of a boxing match but it is never violent. Just a case of get out of my comfort zone. You might be luckier thanme though. Fingers crossed and hope for the best i say. Good Luck

They need time to sort out who is the top cat. I have two cats who started out by not tolerating each other and fighting, but after some time (almost a year) they now accept each other to the degree where they aren't fighting, but they're definitely not close friends.

I've recently had this with my two cats who are sisters. I used a Feliway plug in diffuser, Bach's rescue remedy in their water, vanilla extract in a small drop by their tail (NOT VANILLA ESSENCE, IT MUST BE EXTRACT) and Felifriend. They all helped to calm the atmosphere down a little.

Who knows, they may always fight, but as they get older they may settle down.
