After a life time with cats I'm still trying to find out but I know they understand a lot of words. They also talk a lot. I'm sure my tom is swearing at me at times. I defenitely get a mouthful if no being quick enough to let him in when the weather is bad.The queen is more dignified.
BUT! Remember, cats are the masters and we, the humans, are their slaves. Factum.

The cats don't learn "commands", because they don't obey unless they want to. But I am pretty sure that my cat understands pretty much everything I say, at least when it has to do with him!
And the are indeed smarter than dogs. You must have had both to really appreciate this.

Cats can understand and be trained in just about anything. I have a rescued street cat & he plays fetch, when he can't find his favorite mousie he will go stand where it is {like in a closet cuz it went under the door} he will go & cry and rub against the door until I open it.
When he brings the mouse to me if it's too far away and I can't reach it, I tell him it's too far away & he'll get it & bring it closer to me.
He comes to me & cries and does a Lassie thing like, follow me, to show me where it is so I can help him get it.
When I was packing to move he opened a box that I had locked the flaps on {you know, fold them under each other} and then went across the room to open a different one and then he carried my vegetable seeds out of the one box & put them in the other, tons of trips but he moved each packet! lol I don't know why.
He can smell string I swear! Will even get into friends purses and dig out any string, ribbon or spring keyring & carry them around. He is one of the smartest cats I have ever had.
He also loves to be rocked like a baby and will climb up on my chest & lay there until I rock him and he falls asleep.

Cats understand way more than people give them credit for,in my opinion they just choose to ignore you as they are very independant animals and unlike dogs they dont look for praise. There is an old saying, you dont own your cat, your cat owns you.

A cat understands as much as the cat wants to understand. They also don't forget if you've upset them.
Look for twitching ears when you're talking about it. Be careful what you say, and remember.........
The cat knows where you sleep !!!!! Revenge is sweet.

First of all you didn't hear good because dogs are smarter than cats. Just like gorilla or horse or dolphins.
Second your cat still can learn a lot if you really treat her/he. Just like a school. You more teach she/he more will learn.

Definitely cats understand most things you tell them. Especially when it comes to food. I recently thought my cat to fetch string when I throw down the stairs and bring it back to me again. Thought that was pretty cool. I love showing off and showing people our trick.

Cats understand commands?! ROFL!!
The Egyptians worshipped cats as Gods. I think that cats haven't forgotten that, give us commands, and then get cold when we don't respond.

In my experience, cats understand everything that is said to them...whether they obey or not is a different matter!
