Windows XP is still going to be around for several years. Traditionally operating systems have been around long after a newer version is available, and the significant upgrading required to run Vista will probably prolong XP's existence.
For many people having a Vista-compliant machine means buying a new one, and having to use different softwares than they are accustomed to due to compatability issues. Not everyone will be running out to get Vista tomorrow.

Considering they still support windows 2000 pro, xp is going to be around for a long time to come. In order for companies to upgrade to vista, they would also have to upgrade a lot of hardware and they won't be doing that anytime soon. (too expensive) So your safe to purchase an xp product.

windows XP is a commercial product. Phasing out simply means from the time they decide they will not add any updates to the existing software. However the OS can remain functional as long as there are other softwares running on it. We should not let our actions decided by the whims of manufacturers. Think of it as a car. You can use the car as long as the sapres and the repair service is available even if the manufacturer has stopped making it.

XP will not be phased out for a long time, as all the businesses and schools etc will have to upgrade to Vista before it does, and this will take a long time.
Don't worry

Judging by the way Micro$oft is currently working id say your looking at about 5-8 years before they phase XP out.
