Have you been sick lately? It is probably just swollen from fighting an infection. Lymph nodes aren't always painful when they are swollen, even when the cause is something normal. That is what lymph nodes do. They have fluid in them with white blood cells and they are your body's defense against pathogens.

I wouldn't worry if I were you; lymph nodes are the first nodes that you will notice swelling in with any kind respiratory tract infections, even if the infection never actually "happened" because your lymph system took care of it.

Bottom line: don't worry, but make a doctor's appointment ASAP. Even though it is a very tiny chance that it is cancer, cancer is not something that you want to mess around with. Time is of essence with a situation like cancer of the lymph nodes.

Lymph nodes are glands that play an important part in your body's defense against infection. They produce lymph, which travels throughout your body in the lymph system, and filters impurities from the body.Common area: Neck (there is a chain of lymph nodes on either side of the front of the neck, both sides of the neck, and down each side of the back of the neck) Lymph nodes can become swollen from infection, inflammatory conditions, an abscess, or cancer. Other causes of enlarged lymph nodes are rare. By far, the most common cause of swollen lymph nodes is infection. Usually it will go away on its own, but if the problem persists go to you family doctor.

Most common reason for lymph node swelling is an infection. Lymph nodes in the neck usually mean infection in throat, teeth, ears, mouth, sinuses that sort of thing. Bad teeth is a common cause, but though not as likely, could be something more serious. Certainly you need to see a Dr. for this.

I would ask your doctor to examine and order a cbc lab and if wbc's are elevated biopsy the lymph node.
