Our pets need quality pet food. Read the ingredients list and learn what the stuff on there is and what it does (or does not do) to/for our pets. A quick pet food 101. If the pet food contains corn/corn products or by products it is a poor quality food. Do not pay attention to advertising, they all say there food is great. Corn is a filler that can trigger skin problems. (allergies, skin problems, itching and excessive shedding) By products is anything from an animal not fit for human consumption, including cancerous tissue. Quality foods have meat as the first ingredient. California Natural, Solid Gold, Innova and Merrick are a few of the best brands available. Rice, fish and sea plants are the staple foods in Japan so any food that is high in meat and rice will usually be good. Avoid cereals and anything containing soy because Akitas digestive systems do not agree with soy.
"For the Akita, I think the best blend of protein available from commercial dog foods would contain poultry, fish, rice and wheat. For this breed I also recommend adding about 1 to 2 teaspoons of canned white Tuna daily to the commercial foods. Akita owners can also make sure their dogs receive a fat-carbohydrate-protein balance similar to the breed's native diet by using a commercial puppy formula for the breed's entire life span. Akita owners should avoid feeding any dog food containing yellow corn, beet pulp, beef or horse meats."

Any food that does NOT have corn or corn gluten meal in the first 3 ingredients.
Dogs don't digest corn any better than we do & it is added as a cheap filler. The more corn the more droppings and the more droppings they produce means they are not utilizing the food they are taking in.
Try to find a food with a wheat base if possible and since he is still a pup try to find one with a good protein level.
You will be surprised when you start looking, most of the very popular brands have corn in the first position and some also have a different type of corn product as the second..
The ingredients are listed according to the amount of that product in the food, so corn & corn products are the main ingredient in most pet foods.

Certain high quality foods, like Canidae, Wellness, and Innova, are formulated for all life stages, so you don't need to get puppy food and then switch to adult food. The dog can stay on the same food throughout their lifetime. Those are the brands I would recommend. My dobie is currently on Wellness, and we've used Innova EVO before as well.

My 3 and a half month old Aktia puppy eats Nutro Natural Choice Large Breed Puppy Lamb and Rice Formula. It is a good quality food, and he loves it and is very healthy.

Its quite obvious that the Australian who answered first is another Australian who plans to kill her dogs by making them morbidly obese. Its amazing how many Australian pets die each year from overfeeding.
Look for a food like Wysong or Chicken Soup dog food as they have great ingredients.

I have 3 large German Shepherds - I mix their diet with a half large tin of dog meat, and also fill their bowls - which are more like buckets - with a complete dry dog food. Their favourites are Friskies complete and Pedigree Chum complete.
Don't just feed yours dry food, a little bit of meat mixed in with it will tempt his appetite.
