Stay away from Vista ...... because of compatibility problems it totally took out my brand new laptop. I'm now stuck with with having to wipe the whole hard drive out and I'm re-installing XP.

Vista is quite beautiful and offer a lot of features. I've had it for months now (starting in RC-1).

The one big issue is your video card. If it's not up to Vista grade, you can run Vista, but you will have a miserable life.

Go to the Microsoft Vista checker, and let it tell you what is needed on you pc before you consider the move.

If Hardware has a green light, copy off all your files.

Boot from the Vista CD, seelect a new install (not upgrade). Delete your partition, and format. It will then continue with the install.

Another way is to buy a new fast hard drive if your's is old.

I dont prefer vista to xp though i have the system ready.
1. It's too costly.. (if u dont use pirated softwares)
2. It is heavy on systems and its system requirement is just too high..
3. Its just more "secure" than needed.. it would pop up with a message box for almost each and every program u run or install.. so a bit annoying at times
4. If u use the system at home, then just evaluate whether u really need vista.. or xp does everything u need.

Well.. these're my views.. consider others' too.. maybe others have other opinions.

Next, If u've already got vista, then start the setup frm the dvd and there would be an option for new install, thereby wiping off xp.

I would not get Vista I bought a PC with Vista and hated it so much that it went back to the store in just a week. It is bloatware in it's finest, also has a feature called user annoyance control and you have to give yourself permission for EVERYTHING!!! I tell my PC what to do not the other way around, also DRM reeks of big brother!
I found a new PC with XP on it and have vowed I will be familiar with Linux by the time XP is no longer supported. I am sure XP will be my last MS operating system.
Really a shame as I have used Windows since 95, they have lost a customer I will just learn to deal with the limitations and complexities of Lunux when the day comes.

VISTA IS NOT EVEN CLOSE TO WORTH GETTING

first of all the $400 price tag is just outrageous

second many PC accessories such as printers, external drives, Mp3 players, and connectivity to Xp OS computers or laptops are not possible

third many programs do not run properly

fourth many computers do not have drivers compatible with Vista

fifth the user interface, while people like it, many of the programs and way the system works is much different than the familiar Xp and even '98, millennium, etc versions.

Bottom line...
DO NOT GET VISTA UNLESS YOU JUST FEEL LIKE WASTING $400 ON NOTHING.

Its worth getting if you like new stuff, love how you will use your computer--graphics, care about security, sharing files instantly with freinds and never want to see a blue screen. How do you format your PC to wipe XP? Vista will do that for you when you do an upgrade. If you do a clean install, XP will be still retained,, in other words, clean install creates two bootable options and an upgrade will wipe out everything. But you must have the storage, memory etc. when you do install Vista. Get it,, you will never want to go back to XP after that.

please.do not buy vista unless you have vista premium,i had vista basic,it was so slow i had to buy more memory, now i have a laptop with vista premium a lot faster,if you have about a 1gb or more i would buy it,but you risk lossing all your data.go on microsoft.com,it would tell you how to wipe off xp,and the price is heavy too,in someways i would stick with xp,cause there is some things that wont run with vista and it is making me mad,so stick with xp for a while and later in the future go to vista, and i know some people are having trouble with it.choose XP.

before you decide to wipe XP look at the Vista vs XP benchmarks

Also if you install Vista anything on your PC is owned by microsoft. This is Digital Rights Management and Vista is the only operating system that makes users check the T&C to say that all infomation and data on your PC is owened by microsoft

No - IMHO vista is nowhere near ready for mainstream use. Too much doesn't work. On my laptop, I got the drivers working more easily in Linux than I did in vista.

You can buy vista as an upgrade so that you don't have to format, but beware you are very likely to have trouble with devices and programs on your computer!

Unless you are really really comfortable changing operating systems around I would recommend you stay away from vista until it is ready.

well, if you ask me, the good ole XP knows everything i need. i can live without 3D, rotateable windows, where you can wright to the rear side of the window as well (i would never find the text there) and all the add on guizmos that are actually worth nothing....
So: if i were you i'd stick with XP, no need to follow every stupid trend:)
