For girls, there's really no such thing. The "friend zone" is something guys made up to make themselves feel better when a girl they are friends with doesn't see them in a romantic light. It's along the same lines as a guy saying some girl they asked out who turned them down must be a lesbian. Same idea.
If you meet a girl and she likes you romantically when you meet forming a friendship with her will not change those feelings. In fact, a lot of times a girl can see you only as a friend until she gets to know you well, gets closer to you, and then she may start to see you in a more romantic light.
If a girl says she sees you as just a friend it's because she has probably always seen you that way, from the beginning. Becoming friends or not becoming friends with her wouldn’t have changed that.
There are people we are attracted to and people we are not attracted to in a romantic way. It has nothing to do with how physically attractive they are, how nice or how smart they are. Those things are assets, but we all know that we have some of the greatest people in our lives that we still cannot think of in that way, it just is not there. No chemistry.
So while feelings can grow as people get to know each other and become closer, they don’t get put into a "zone" of any kind. It’s a myth.
Yes, girls say this sometimes. It’s a way of letting you down easy because they care about you and don’t want to hurt you. Saying “I can’t think of you that way, you are my friend” is a gentler way of saying “I’m sorry, I think you are great but it just isn’t there for me.”
Get to know the girl, talk to her, find out who she is and let her see who you are. If it’s there between you it will happen. If it’s there for only one of you that’s something you will just have to deal with. It happens to everyone. But you have a much better shot with her by being her friend and taking the time to show her you are interested in who she is, what she thinks and how she feels. Much better.
Good luck to both of you.
