I don't think it would be illegal but it may be against school policy. In today's world it's best to leave toys like that at home.

Many schools now have a "zero tolerance" policy for anything that even resembles a weapon. Generally, the policy doesn't involve criminal charges, just a escort off the property and maybe a trespass notice. If your kid brought the toy gun, he gets suspended from the school.
Recently, a high school student was found to have a PICTURE of a handgun he admired hanging in his school locker. He was dragged to the Principal's office, ordered to remove the "threatening picture", and threatened with a 30 day suspension if he ever did that again.
Often schools are run by panicky, fearful, and stupid sheep. Leave your toy gun at home.

It wouldn't be illegal in the criminal sense, but the school probably has a policy in place restricting these things. Check with the school principal first.
What kind of school play has guns in it?

The way the laws are set up now, they will either suspend, or expel the child for do this under normal circumstances, but for a play, it may be allowed. In the name of "security", lawmakers have lost touch with sanity.

I worked for The NYPD School Safety Div for many years. (Now Retired). Best advice I can give you is to have the teacher bring it in....In today's non-violent school atmosphere a weapon of any kind should not be part of what is taught in school. It tends to legitimize violence.
