In most cases the Statute of Limitations would apply. The investigation would continue long enough to get the evidence needed to charge someone with an offense. Then the Speedy Trial Act would go into effect. Normally most would be over within about a two year period.

There is no time limit , as long as it takes to solve the case, or if it runs into a dead end, it will be shelved as a cold case.Murder investigations are NEVER closed, regardless of time.
