Hey there,

My fiancee and I are getting married soon and want to move to the metro-Vancouver area. How hard is it to move there, get jobs, and get established? I went to the CIC website and took the little test they had, and I didn't make the number of points they currently require.. how much of a factor does that play? Any advice on what I should do? I figure'd asking people that have already made the move would be best.

Thanks!

It's a points based system. It sucks that you didn't get the points. They're pretty strict on that (since it's the law). Apply for an open work permit here, and get over here. OR come here to "visit," appy for jobs here, when you land one, get a work permit. Then apply from inside. Once you've been here a while, and have a job here, you get more points. Plus, you'll establish ties to the country.

I'd also recomend you just call CIC a few times, and see what they say.

I live in the Vancouver area and let me warn you now it's bloody expensive! I'm not sure on the immigration process. I thought immigrants needed to have a family sponser or an employer sponser them to move over?
Well this answer was pretty useless I guess!
Don't live in the downtown area though unless you can afford like $350,000+ 1-2 bedroom condos. The suburbs aren't as bad, you can usually buy a nice house with 3-4 bedrooms, with a nice living room, office, and large yard for that price.

my advice to u, is to play it smart. first things first, get your passports. then, go up there for a weekend visit, and just see if you and ur man really truly like it up there. look around, apply for jobs IN PERSON, and let them know you are currently still living in the states, and would prefer to get a job before you move there. then, what i want you to do, is write on your applications and put on your resumes "requesting phone interview, as i live in the US still". then, they should respect that, and call you for a phone interview. once they tell you "YOU GOT THE JOB, YOU START ON MM/DD/YEAR,"then, plan to look around for apartments or whatever RIGHT AWAY, and start moving your crap up there. good luck and smart move to go up there! lots of ppl are, for the impending war with iran, and impending natural disasters that will be coming this way.
