I want to add to the technical information (that nicotine is the addictive chemical responsible, and that it acts on brain receptors that stimulate pleasure centers) that in addition to the chemical cues from smoking, there are also addicting social cues of cigarettes; i.e. environment with friends, fun night out at a bar, etc. that are also involved. Rolling a cigarette in your hand, for instance, or opening a new pack, those can become also associated with the pleasure a cigarette gives. Addiction is complex. If you want to know more detail, I've listed a book below. For a used copy on Amazon.com it's only about 11 dollars.

Its a drug.
Nicotine takes over a vital parts of youre body functions.
Nicotine acts on the nicotinic acetylcholine receptors. In small concentrations it increases the activity of these receptors, among other things leading to an increased flow of adrenaline, a stimulating hormone. The release of adrenaline causes an increase in heart rate, blood pressure and respiration, as well as higher glucose levels in the blood.

Its the nicotine that makes you dependend to keep on smoking.

I smoked 30 years 1 packet a day and stopped 12 years ago wothout looking back one day. Its possible to stop it depends on yourself, not cutting down, no nicotine pads, just blunt refusal.

Tobacco smoke contains nicotine, an addictive stimulant which temporarily improves alertness, memory, and mood, but also forms a strong physical and psychological chemical dependence (addiction). Nicotine, like any stimulant, can also increase anxiety, restlessness, and disturb metabolism.

It is due to nicotine. It changes the impulses to the brainwaves causing it to be addicting. There are also another two harmful substances in the cigarette which is Carbon monoxide and tar.
