My oldest son is 5 years old and he earns money by doing chores. It's small right now since he's young - he earns a quarter for cleaning his room, another for helping feed the dogs, etc.

I started doing this because I found myself buying him new things everytime I saw something I knew he'd like. It got to be too much and he started becoming a spoiled brat. Paying him for doing his chores has not only helped make him more responsible around the house, but he can now buy what he wants on his own. I don't have to feel like I'm overdoing it in the spoiling department.

Not till they absolutely demand it and then they have to have a legitimate reason, then make them earn it. LOL If they ever get started they WILL break you. No I would say about 8 or 10 and then you have to be careful about their maturity. If the 8 year old is more responsible do you trust him with more? If the oldest loses money every day at school do you check and see if he has a girl friend or a bully. Now that I have you more confused. GOOD LUCK but there is no exact right answer to that question unless we knew your kids. Hope That Helps

I started mine at 5. They have some to spend and some to save and some for the church. Out of this they also buy the family b'day/christmas present (about $2 each). Mine have a good sense of what money is for and how much things cost. The earlier the better, if they want something you can say to use their pocket money. It is amazing when they have to pay for it that they find they don't really need it that much.

I'd say the age they are at is a good age to start giving an allowance, but only if they do the needed chores to earn it. I wouldn't start with a whole lot though ,because as they get older, you'll probably want to increase it and at this age even a dollar is a lot to a kid.

I started giving my kids pocket money at age 5. I would give them a dollar or two, and I would also explain to them how to budget, and handle money, and I wanted to see what they were going to do with it. they could save it, or spend some on a dollar store adventure. I explained to them that the way they were responsible for their money now would reflect on how they would spend money in their teen, and this also let me know who was responsible enough to grow with their money. Now my 13 year old can catch a sale, and if I gave him 100.00 dollars he gets what he says he is going to get, and come back with money, my 16 year old would say what she was going to spend her money on, and come back with something totally different, and then the next week ask me for money to get the same thing she was suppose to go the week before. I cut her off from her 100.00 dollar shopping. She messed up for herself. My son has been shopping for hisself at 5 years old. We go into the store he picks out what he wanted, and I would give him the money to pay for it, and he would count back to make sure he had the right change.

Well, how do you handle their school lunches? If they pay with cash, it could be a fantastic way to build responsibility. A little pocket money ($5 at the most) probably wouldn't be a bad thing, and if they spend it on candy/small toy it isn't that big of a deal.

money teaches responsibility. the age depends entirely on the child. give them a little one week and if they don't spend it all give them a little extra the next.
