in the Bible it says that when we die we return to dust...we cease to exist

but we have a hope, if we are saved, that when Jesus comes back we will be raised and will go with Him to heaven.

We do not go straight to heaven or hell when we die...this is unbiblical

The soul leaves the body at the point of death. The soul will progress to the higher worlds or lower worlds depending on the deeds performed ( karma ).

There are some souls who do not progress to either of the two and hang about in the astral world which coexists with our own world. This usually happens to souls from premature death or those who performed heinous crimes. These lost souls will have to wait untill the time comes for their progress to the higher or lower worlds.

The higher and lower worlds again are not the final destination. It is a temporary stop for the soul to either enjoy the good deeds or suffer for the wrongdoings it performed in its past lives. The soul after enjoying or suffering in these worlds will be reborn to fulfill any remaining karmas.

Great souls who have fulfilled their karmas, crossed the ocean of desires and conquered their ego become one with omnipresent all pervading God. They have no rebirth. That is what is termed as Moksha ( Hinduism ) or Nirvana ( Buddhism ).

Sheol or Hades... both mean the common grave of mankind, that is where we go when we die.

Death can be likened to sleeping, in a deep sleep, without dreams. The person who is dead does not know he is dead. They know nothing. Psalm 146:4 says when a person dies "his thoughts do perish." (Ecclesiastes 9:5,6,10)

When Jesus went to resurrect a girl who had died Jesus said she was sleeping. Luke 8:49-55 Says: "While he was yet speaking, a certain representative of the presiding officer of the synagogue came, saying: "Your daughter has died; do not bother the teacher any longer." On hearing this, Jesus answered him: "Have no fear, only put forth faith, and she will be saved." When he reached the house ......people were all weeping and beating themselves in grief for her. So he said: "Stop weeping, for she did not die but is sleeping." At this they began to laugh at him scornfully, because they knew she had died. But he took her by the hand and called, saying: "Girl get up!" And her spirit returned, and she rose instantly,...." It's not that the girl was not dead but because Jesus had power and authority from God to resurrect the dead, it was as if she was only sleeping because she could be awoken from death and she was!

When someone dies, people's lives go on, and the person is forgotten by many but God is not like that. He remembers those who have died who were righteous. Job 14:14,15 shows that Jehovah God yearns to resurrect the dead. He so deeply cares about us that he yearns to resurrect his servants who have died. And He will!

Revelation 1:18 shows that Jesus has the keys of death and hades, which also shows that authority has been given to him to resurrect those who have died.

John 5:28 & 29 shows that in the future Jesus will resurrect "all those in the memorial tombs". There will be a resurrection of many who have died.

Those who have died are awaiting a resurrection. They are in the safest place possible. They are just resting/sleeping. They do not suffer and we don't need to worry about our dead loved ones. They are not somewhere unsafe. They are in God's memory and He promises to resurrect those who have died who are in the memorial tombs.

What makes you think you're going to go anywhere. Do you know that thought and consciousness depend on lots of complicated chemical and electrical interactions in your brain? What makes you think that thought and consciousness will continue after the brain is gone? Is that not illogical?

If you're saved, you'll go to heaven.
Jesus Christ said, "I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life. No one comes to the Father except through Me."

There are only two possible destinations. 1.) when you accept Jesus as your Lord and Saviour in your heart, you will go to heaven. 2.) otherwise, you go to hell....
