A more appropriate answer is what is the tax burden of the average American family? The federal income tax withheld from your pay check is far from the only taxes you pay. Every consumer item you purchase has about a 20% embedded tax in it that you do not see. Think about it. You buy a coke for one dollar, every resource required to make the coke and its container was taxed as transactions took place to bring it to market. Every employee involved in its production pays taxes and their employer must match certain taxes (social security). Therefore there it an embedded tax all ready, remember corporations do not pay taxes, individuals do, corporate taxes are simply calculated into the products price.
As I mentioned above your employer matches the taxes withheld from your check for social security. If you pay $150 out of your check the real tax burden is $300. Medicare, that's a tax. Plus the state taxes. Some economists estimate the average American families’ tax burden at 40% or more.
Remember the good old days when Dad worked and Mom stayed home with the kids? What happened? It's not an "income distribution" problem, which is a very socialist term. The tax burden on American families has sky rocketed, it's just hidden, do some research and you'll see. I didn't make this stuff up.
The above is why I support the Fairtax. Learn more at fairtax.org

Ideally, 100% of your income tax liability is withheld from your paycheck. If everything works out right, you won't owe anything or get much of a refund on your tax return.
