I recently got my ears pierced at claire's (my first piercing) and it was fine on the first day, a few days ago. I don't know if my ear piercing is infected or not, or if it is just normal...my left lobe feels 'fatter' or 'thicker', i think it's swollen, and both of my lobes hurt when i touch my piercings. The left lobe hurts more, and sometimes it feels a bit itchy. Is this normal? or is it infected?
What are some specific symptoms of an infected ear piercing?
Should i go see a doctor? Or should i wait a bit longer and see what happens?
=(

thanks!

I am not a professional piercer or anything but I have gotten a lot of piercings and you are doing one thing no one should do to a new piercing, and thats touching! Never ever touch a new piercing for at least 4 weeks because your new piercing will get germs and lead to infection and irritation. If its red and swollen, then that could possibly lead to an infection. Clean it regularly with the claire antiseptic you should have recieved when they pierced your ears. Clean it at least 3 times a day. Continue to do sea salt soaks as another answeree mentioned with sea salt (found in any supermarket). The sea salt soaks circulates the blood or something. Never ever scratch your piercing or bother it.

I had an infection for over 2 years on and off and believe me, it could get worse. It basically looked like an oversized pus filled pimple. You need to act now before it gets worse. If your swolleness doesn't go away, by law your piercee is supposed to help you out during the healing process. If it gets worse and doens't still go away, a demertologist or doctor will put on some antibiotics (thats what happened to me) and will hopefully get rid of the swollness.

Swollen is normal. If you got yours ears done at Claires, than means they used the gun. Piercing guns pierce through blunt force trauma. The stud isn't sharp, so the gun just forces the stud through the flesh. Of course it's going to irritate your ears, of course your lobes are going to feel hot, swollen, painful, and they will look red. You just got a blunt metal object shoved through them. Swelling is NORMAL. Pain is NORMAL. You have a wound in your ear that will take time to heal.

The first stage of healing is called the Inflammatory state. The body sends a variety of different cells into the wound, almost immediately the wound is inflicted. These cause blood to clot and seal of the jewellery from the body. This extra blood flow causes the distinctive redness of a healing piercing, this shouldn't be confused with infection. During this phase the wound will release exudate or crusting, this is a combination of fluid, dead tissue and white blood cells. This shouldn't be confused with pus or seen as a sign of infection.

Signs of infection include excessive redness, distention or swelling around the piercing, bad smell, and the discharge of green bloody puss, swollen lymph nodes, and fever. Most of what we think of as piercing infections are only irritations. If you think do you have an infection, not just an irritation, see a doctor right away. However, in my own opinion you do not have an infection.

To make your piercings feel better, use sea salt soaks. Dissolve 1/4 teaspoon of de-iodonized sea salt into a cup of warm water, and soak the piercings in it for 10-15 minutes, twice a day. That will do wonders for healing.

DO NOT use neosporin, or any other ointment. They limit air circulation to the piercing, and they can cause Granulomas. Antibiotic ointments should only be used if recommended by a physician. Some people experience allergic side effects that can lead to anaphylactic shock, which is potentially fatal.

The pain and itching is normal, it will usually take 6-10 weeks to fully heal.
THE NUMBER ONE CAUSE OF INFECTION IS TOUCHING AND PLAYING WITH THE PIERCING, ONLY TOUCH IT WHEN CLEANING!.
If it was infected, it would have a yellow discharge

Call doctor IMMEDIATELY if:
The earring clasp becomes embedded in the earlobe and can't be removed.
Call within 24 hours if:
Swelling or redness spreads beyond the pierced area.
You develop a fever (over 100°F, or 37.8°C).
The infection is not improving after 48 hours of treatment.
You have other concerns or questions.
You can always go back to Claires and have them look at it

Your ear could be infected or you are having an allergic reaction to the new earring. Alot of earrings have nickel in them. Try changing your earring to one that states it is non allergic metal. Then use hydrogen peroxide (you can get this at the local drugstore) and apply that to the new hole. It may make your ear itchy, but it will help with the infection.

Just to be on the safe side, why don't you put a little Neosporin on each lobe a couple of times a day. Be sure to apply a dot in front and back of the piercing.
