Hi Ms_jaffa_cake!
Puppys usually develop constipation from eating wads of grass or from swallowing bones. Very furry dogs can get constipated when soft stool forms mats in the long fur around the rectum and blocks the opening. Waste held for a long time against the skin leads to irritation and infection, which make pets so sore that they don't even want to try to defecate.
If your pup shows any signs of illness, he must be brought to the veterinarian immediately, since there could be a blockage of the intestinal tract.
The following will help your pup:
Add canned pumpkin to every meal. The dosage can range from 1/8 tsp for a small dog to 1/2 tsp for a large dog, depending upon results. Start with 1/4 tsp for a medium and large dog, increasing the amount depending on stool results. Please look article: http://www.askedweb.com/askedweb/Constipation_In_Dogs/
Some pets have problems with chronic constipation because their intestines don't work normally. One type of prescription medication, Lactulose, may help by increasing the amount of water retained by the fecal material, allowing for softer bowel movements. Please look article: http://www.askedweb.com/askedweb/Constipation/
Dogs that have corkscrew tails, often have anatomical structures that can interfere with normal defecation.

pop to the chemist and get a bottle of lactulose and get a syringe and give the pup just a tiny drop and i mean a tiny drop just the first mark on the syringe and that will work my vet told me to do that when i had the same problem with my pup and it worked and put a little bit of vaseline on the inside of the pups rectum with a cotton wool bud so that he dosent get a sore butt and he will be fine and then if there is still a problem go to the vet pups get this so at least once a week you should mix a tiny bit of olive oil in the pups food and make sure that you dont just feed your pup on dried food give the pup a mixture of tin food and dry to good luck

You have the right idea, as far as it went. Constipation is a symptom of an underlying problem. It could be diet related or blockage just to name two reasons. Start with a vet to find out WHY the pup is constipated. Treat the reason and the symptom will go away.

Are you sure she isn't going somewhere when you're not looking? Lots of things will make her go - milk, raw liver, raw vegetables, bran, but don't give her too much or she'll have the runs. Make sure she drinks plenty too. If it carries on, take her to the vet for a check up.

You need to get her to a veternarian, she may have eaten something that is blocking her rectum, that can cause her stomach to turn and that will kill her.
