If you put your zip code in here, you may just find the very best dog for your family!> http://search.petfinder.com/search/search.cgi?action=1&pet.Animal=Dog&pet.Breed=&pet.Age=&pet.Size=&pet.Sex=&location=CA&preview=1&scope=0&x=13&y=9
Most of these are thoroughly evaluated, so you know how much they shed, and how they interact with children and other pets.
Happy Shopping!

Longer haired dogs you will find wont be such a nuisance with hair such as short haired dogs. Longer haired dogs hair mostly comes out when you brush it because it knots at the ends and clumps together easier and some dogs such as poodles do not shed at all.
Border collies are a good size but need a lot of exercise. A Basenji does not shed much and grooms its self pretty much which is good for a short haired dog, as mentioned before poodles, Giant Schnauzer, grey hounds if you brush them when the seasons are changing you should get pretty much most of the hair they shed, Goldendoodles average size little to no shedding and the Boston Terrier.
All dogs whether they shed much or not will need brushing, it will help get dirt or pests from their fur keepign their coats in good health and their skin.
Researching breeds is always handy but remember if you want a dog go down to the shelter, dogs here are in need of a home and a friend you should always look for a dog your compatible with not one you think looks good get to know the dog before you buy it and if you adopt it you may be saving its life from being put down and can go for an older dog which means no going through the puppy stage where they constantly pee on everything chew everything to bits and pretty much run amok.
I am sure you will find plenty of dogs with low shedding there and may be the perfect dog for you.
Another note, a crossbreed may be better than a pedigree, pedigrees often have many genetic diseases that are inherited through the breed and family and a mutt will always be more unique than any other kind of dog ;)

Australian Shepherds are wonderful dogs... and very smart. Full grown dogs will range in size from 40-60 lbs. Wonderful companions. If you take the time to train, they learn easily. My baby never is on a leash (except when required) because she responds to voice commands. I don't have a fenced yard, but we walked the parameter a few times, and now she never crosses it, and when we go anywhere in the neighborhood and she gets bored, she "runs away" home... She is great with the neighborhood children.

I get her groomed a few times a year, and when I do that shedding is not a huge problem - but it does exist.

I had a border collie. Great protective family dog, but sorry to say, she shed like a beast every day of her life :( I miss her though. She has been gone for about 2 months and I still have dog hair on my clothes. I would maybe get over the shedding thing because most dogs do shed, the better breeds do anyway. Good luck!

Irish terrier, a breed of hardy working terrier developed in the British Isles and believed to be one of the oldest terriers. It stands about 18 in. (46 cm) high at the shoulder and weighs from 25 to 27 lb (11–12 kg). The dense, wiry coat lies fairly close to the body and is usually solid red-wheaten, bright red, or golden red in color. Probably descended from the same wirehaired black-and-tan dog of Great Britain that produced most of the terriers, the Irish terrier was used to hunt small game and destroy vermin, both on land and in the water. Today it is principally raised as a show competitor and family pet.

I've heard that Basenji's don't shed. They also don't bark.

The Basenji does not bark but does make yodeling noises. The Basenji is known as the "barkless dog".

The Basenji is a dog with fastidious, dainty habits, such as cleaning himself all over as does a cat; the basenji also lacks a doggy odor, contributing to his assets as a house dog.

When choosing a dog for your family, the Labrador Retriever makes a excellent choice. Intelligent, loyal, and lovable are just a few of their likeable traits…

before adopting/buying any breed, study indepth about the breed so that there is proper and loving care possible for the dog.

REMEMBER there is NO BAD DOG..ONLY BAD OWNERS. Never Blame a dog.

Sheltie. They are great family dogs and only shed twice a year. They are smaller in size and great dogs!
