Teens of the the last generation didnt have access to the gadgets of today or the fast foods criminals and so played sports more and were a lot fitter.

I actually grew up when a television was not the norm for every house and colour TV was a science fiction fantasy.

My friends and I used to play footy everyday after school in winter and cricket in summer.

Mum used to cook all our meals which actually had VEGETABLES as well as meat.

We didnt have chemical laden food or a huge choice of soft drinks.

We got out and lived life for ourselves , not through the vagaries of computers and internet.

We respected our teachers and Parents and called elders MR or Mrs, and the local copper would smack your ears before he took you home to your father so he could smack you around the ears as well.

We had boundaries and new what would happen when we crossed them.there was no disrespecting teachers or playing up in class, if you did you got 6 of the best across the hands ( and this was from Nuns).

If you didnt do your Homework teachers actually cared enought o let you parents know.

We not taught the shallow values of fashion, wealth etc to distinguish people, you were taught teamwork and values of helping others. We were taught self respect and values of being part of society . we taught to give back and not just take.

Liberated teens ..these are just yahoos who have no boundaries or self respect and should have their arses kicked hard, Conservative types are like the liberated but with better access to more expensive clothes.

A credit card is no substitute for Love..eventhough there are many who would like it to be.

Teenagers of "yesterday" were bought up with values and self repect....not dragged up as a disposable commodity!

I think kali hit the nail on the head. For most kids, not all but most, nowadays are raised to believe they deserve everything in the world simply because they learned how to breathe air. From screaming 4 year olds with parents that will not discipline them, to preteens that snap back and are absolutely rude, to teenagers and young adults who sit around wondering why they don't get massive raises and promotions and tips and bonus for doing substandard work, it's all in the way kids are raised today.

60 years ago teenagers signed up to go to the worst war in history, because they knew their country was at stake. 40 years ago students protested and rebelled against unfair, immoral government. Today, teenagers watch "sweet 16" and whine when they don't get the newest color ipod.

It's pathetic.

The biggest factor is the disclosure they have with their parents as the judges for what is right and wrong. Many years ago teens had their parents to look up to and ask what was right and wrong, or see what was right and wrong, or live by right and wrong. Today, many kids have their ipods to live to what is right and wrong, and if it is just Fergilicious, then that is so right.

Or they have Youtube, telling them that military beheadings are right and wrong.....they are only kids. Yes, the child says that doesn't affect them, but seeing that sort of thing affects me,,,,,its wrong to show that sort of thing.

Kids live today without any parents guiding them or showing them any strong moral support, except that they are at work all the time. What sort of kid wants to grow up to be like their parent now, working all the time and commuting so that their own kids can grow up like that, if they can comprehend seeing that far ahead?? Its sickening from what I see, and I watch two kids from my friend who works 14 hrs a day, sometimes more. I'm just glad my husband has time to take my own son out on the weekends......

Just plain disgusting how parents treat their kids now, that is me seeing how things are in Cali......

I agree with "kaliroadrager", which in short is that the only difference between nowadays teens, and those of yesterday, is in the way the parents raise them, or should I say, not raise them!!!

The teenagers of today have much more options. More ways of life to decide to follow. More pyschological influences from the media. More pocket money to spend on junk. More reason to rebel as the glaring realities of the stuffed up world is much more evident.

manners, options they have to go to school or not, their "rights" to drive at 16 and others, more provocative dress code, norms as to what is okay to do and what is not, the way they treat their parents...there are many many more
