1. Learn the following rules concerning pronunciation.
2. English is considered a stressed language while many other languages are considered syllabic.
3. In other languages, such as French or Italian, each syllable receives equal importance (there is stress, but each syllable has its own length).
4. English pronunciation focuses on specific stressed words while quickly gliding over the other, non-stressed, words.
5. Stressed words are considered content words: Nouns e.g. kitchen, Peter - (most) principle verbs e.g. visit, construct - Adjectives e.g. beautiful, interesting - Adverbs e.g. often, carefully
6. Non-stressed words are considered function words: Determiners e.g. the, a - Auxiliary verbs e.g. am, were - Prepositions e.g. before, of - Conjunctions e.g. but, and - Pronouns e.g. they, she
7. Read the following sentence aloud: The beautiful Mountain appeared transfixed in the distance.
8. Read the following sentence aloud: He can come on Sundays as long as he doesn't have to do any homework in the evening.
9. Notice that the first sentence actually takes about the same time to speak well!
10. Even though the second sentence is approximately 30% longer than the first, the sentences take the same time to speak. This is because there are 5 stressed words in each sentence.
11. Write down a few sentences, or take a few example sentences from a book or exercise.
12. First underline the stressed words, then read aloud focusing on stressing the underlined words and gliding over the non-stressed words.
13. Be surprised at how quickly your pronunciation improves! By focusing on stressed words, non-stressed words and syllables take on their more muted nature.
14. When listening to native speakers, focus on how those speakers stress certain words and begin to copy this.
Tips:
1. Remember that non-stressed words and syllables are often "swallowed" in English.
2. Always focus on pronouncing stressed words well, non-stressed words can be glided over.
3. Don't focus on pronouncing each word. Focus on the stressed words in each sentence.
Tip 1
Do not confuse pronunciation of words with their spelling! For example, "threw" and "through", although spelled differently, are pronounced the same. Also, identical letters or letter clusters in words do not always produce the same sound. For example, the "ough" in "though" and "through" represents a different sound in each word. Learn to practise what you hear, not what you see.
Tip 2
Imagine a sound in your mind before you say it. Try to visualize the positioning of your mouth and face. Think about how you are going to make the sound.
Tip 3
Listen to and try to imitate the Pronunciation Power instructor. In addition to listening for specific sounds, pay attention to pauses, the intonation of the instructor's voice and patterns of emphasis. This can be just as important as the pronunciation of sounds.
Tip 4
The English language has many different dialects, and words can be pronounced differently. It is important, however, that you pronounce words clearly to ensure effective communication.
Tip 5
Finally, the Pronunciation Power program is a tool to help you. But you must practise what you are learning! Remember that you are teaching your mouth a new way to move. You are building muscles that you do not use in your own language. It is like going to the gym and exercising your body. Use the program to exercise your mouth a little bit each day.

Just speak to English people a lot! If you live in a non-english speaking country that might be hard. Maybe then you could watch english television and practice repeating what they say? I know when I took french there was sites I could go to where I could click on a word and it would say it and I could repeat it until my pronounciation was correct. Maybe you could search for something like that for english?

Listen British Radio , BBC or equally competent ones , tape and speak the same yourself again and again. Join any good English speaking coaching class nearby. Taped good speeches too are available in markets . Use them too in the same manner. There is no age bar. Do not care if others make a fun of it.

HAHAHA You do realize that you wrote that incorrectly right? Ahhh the irony.
Your name sounds Indian. Based on that premise, I would say that it is hard for Indians who are raised speaking broken english to learn to drop that infamous accent. You might need a speech coach to help out. If you only want to learn better grammar, then I would agree with the first person who suggested speaking with
people who known english as their first language. They could give helpful hints telling you when you could say something more correctly. For instance, if I were asking your question, I would have asked.
"What is a good way to improve my English pronunciation?"
or
"How to improve my English pronunciation?" is a shorter version that works OK as well.
Look at your question and the correct form of how to write it. You incorrectly said "was" instead of "to". Was is in the past. You are asking how to do something. Not how was something.
Plus you misspelled pronunciation. Keep working on your English and I will keep working on my German.
