1) is it always really painful? i think ive had an ear ache for awhile now, but its not too painful just throbs sometimes
2)are there medicines i can take without perscription? i wanna get something now without having to wait til a doctors appt
3)what if i dont have one and take the ear medicine, or ear drops...?

Here's an old recipe for treating ear aches:
take part of a cotton ball, soak it in warm olive oil,
(squeeze out the cotton a bit, you want it damp,
not dripping)
put a small piece of raw garlic in the middle of the
cotton ball, roll it up and shape it to about the size
of an ear plug, place it in the affected ear.
The warm olive oil will soothe the irritated places,
the garlic will kill any infection that is causing it.

This works, my grandma used to use it on us all the time
when we were kids, I still do it when my ear bothers me.
The only drawback, you get really bad garlic breath.
Otherwise there are no side effects. Just need to make
sure that you have rolled the garlic piece securely in enough
cotton so that it doesn't fall out but stays in the cotton ball.

Do not stick anything in your ear that is smaller then your elbow. So that would rule out the cotton ball idea. That idea isn't practical and would do nothing but promote further infection and possibly inner ear damage. The best thing you can take right now is an over the counter pain killer such as Advil. (Make sure you don't take a medication you have an allergy to.) These drugs are called non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). These drugs are Pain Relievers as well as Anti-Inflammatory, meaning they reduce swelling which is a problem with infections. Simply take a medication like that until you can make an appointment with the doctor, but be sure to see the doctor as soon as possible as it could possibly be an infection which could lead to serious complications. Your general family doctor should be able to help you or direct you to a specialist if need be. Good Luck

You really should see a doctor as quickly as you can. There are many things that could cause pain in your ears and when it gets really bad you will be very very unhappy. It is unlikely to heal by itself and will get worse.

A common cause if ear pain is using q-tips or similar products. The cotton heads can actually abrade the ear canal and a bacterial infection can get started. This sounds like it may be what is going on for you and it will eventually require treatment, which means a prescription. You can also get fungal infections in your ears, which you'd also want to get a prescription for.

My suggestion would be to see if you can get into urgent care (which is differernt than emergency). My local medical center has this when it's too urgent to wait for an appointment but not strictly an emergency. If you can't do that, make an appointment for as soon as possible.

I have a history of ear issues, and I guarantee that if you wait until it really really hurts to seek medical attention, you will remember my advice and be sorry you didn't take it.

Yes they are all PAINFUL
If it is not infected you can bake an onion and use the juice as eardrops (messy and smells). The pain is likely to effect other muscles in the area....
Much pain is from muscles below is an example of what may help (based on headaches).
Begin with a couple swigs of molasses or a couple of bananas daily - magnesium (which regulates many things in the body) and potassium (a needed building block for muscles).
Drink at least 1/2 gallons of water per day. Running a body low on water is like running a car low on oil is the analogy the head of neurology at UCDavis told my husband about 10 years ago.

Now to the cause - muscles - your back, neck shoulders and head have tender spots. They are knots in the fibers of the muscles called trigger points. It makes the muscles tight which makes them press on nerves and other things causing the pain.

The cure - start with a professional massage, you will also want to go back over any place you can get to 6-12 times per session up to 6 times per day rubbing (or lightly scratching on your head) every where that is tender until the knots go away. The place where the skull connects to the spine press up under the edge of the skull (to get to those muscles).

1.) extremely painful in my situations. other people's ear aches may be different.

2.) take vitamin C. I personally take Tylenol extra strength. If that doesn't work, my doc usually prescribes antibiotics for me.

3.) I don't really know the result. Do it on your own risk.
