I suffered bulging discs at C-5, & 6 from a car wreck 6yrs. ago. My neurosurgeon told me the damage was not major enough for surgery. After 6mos. the pain was no better so I got a 2nd opinion and was told the same. So I've basically suffered ever since. But since I started having children in the past couple yrs....the pain is now unbearable. By 5-6:00 every day, I'm lying down w/ a heating pad on the back of my neck. All these local docs wanna do is get me addicted to pain pills, which I hate the idea of.
Also, one of my neuro's called it degenerative disc disease, but I was injured in a wreck. Is this the same thing? Anyone else suffer like this? Any insight?

I have had disc herniation at three levels but lumbar spine, which I have had surgery on. Degeneration has now started to happen, despite the original problem being caused by an accident, and I still have calcified disc hanging out. I have recently started trying prolotherapy, which is starting to have a fantastic effect for me. I belive this can be used on any area including the neck, my doctor has relayed successes with other patients. I did not go into this treatment blindly and had it checked out thoroughly in medical journals from another doctor. Pain killers are great for short term use, but the more you take, the more you need and then this creates a whole other problem all together, so best to avoid them unless absolutely necessary (and sometimes they just are) Another option to try is an epidural, your neuro will know all about this) whereby they inject into the dural, which can possibly shrink the disk back slightly so it does not impede so much on the nerves which cause the pain.
Have a look at www.prolotherapy.com and the site will explain what it is all about.
Good luck with it, I hope things get better for you.

a Mckenzie certified physical therapist will show you how to fix the condition yourself - if it is a non surgical case I almost guarantee you see one and they will get you squared away - . Also try and avoid sleeping on your back on a pillow for a few nights
