What are some BENEFITS and DOWNFALLS of having non-professional interpreters

Interpreters or Translators?

If one can make an instant interpretation, I would say that the person is somewhat skilled already, regardless of his being a professional or non-professional. The fact that he could immediately understand what is being said and say it it in another language is already a good gauge on his knowledge.

I think it is with the translators (working on written articles) that the difference would spell out the benefits and downfalls.

Pro and Non-pro translators maybe distinguished by one having a certificate after passing a competency examination, and the other one not having a certificate, therefore not considered a professional. The certificate gives the professional an edge in pricing his services higher than a non-pro.

It may not always be applicable, but sometimes, having passed an examination gives credence to ones knowhow on whatever field as claimed.

Sometimes, non-professionals' fault would lie in doing literal translations without really understanding the context in which words or phrases are used..

For ASL.....if their not certified then their skill may not be too in-depth. such as little knowledge on medical words or what not. They are cheaper to hirer so they get paid far less.
