lol...

you would not believe the crap the comes through the er that's NOT a true emergency!!! and the situation you explained certaintly qualifies!!

i had a lady one time get tired of the wait in the er for her "flu" (all she REALLY had was a cold-and she too was eating chips and drinking a mountain dew) so she picked up the courtesy phone in the er waiting room and called 911, thinking that since an ambulance had to come get her-she would go straight back to a bed and not have to wait anymore...

the ambulance crew came in and got her, took her through the back door of our e.r where the dr checked her out really quick and declared her stable enough to wait-so we plopped her butt right back out in the waiting room where she stayed for another 3 hours in addition to the 4 she had already waited!!

it was great!!

triage is used to categorize the severity of an injury. some injury will cause death even with medical attention, some will survive with out medical attention and others will only survive with immediate medical attention.

a person eating Dorito's and complaining of abdominal pain would be put last on my list in an emergency situation

YIKES!!! I would say so. When I went to the ER for Acute Abdominal pain, I was doubled over and thought I was going to pass out from the pain. Turns out it was my gallbladder, but it hurt so bad there was no way I would even think of food, let alone Doritos. Can you say drug seeker?

Haha. I like this guy, this is the second question i've answered of his. I wouldn't actually say it's not a true emergency though, for the sake of your own job i'd make them stop eating the chips and take them in. Could be something serious that can't be solved by riding on an Ambulance.

Abdominal pain may be the indication of a disease that requires diagnostic testing, and possibly surgical intervention, requiring the patient be NPO. (nothing by mouth)
All pain is subjective- the pain is real to the patient, and following sound medical protocol is the safest way to address the complaint.

I wouldn't jump to any conclusions.
The patient may have an injury that caused internal blleding, or a blockage in the intestines. The fact that they're eating my not be an indicator of where the pain is coming from. (If they complain of heartburn or nausea, then I would tend to think they're full of BS, but to be safe you'd need to look at all the facts.)
