In the pre-1930's the whole agricultural economy in the South was dependant on growing cotton. Crop after crop of cotton quickly depleted the soil fertility causing many farms to be abandoned. Carver tried to introduce the production of the legume crop of peanuts as a crop to rebuild the soil as an alternate crop to cotton. The problem was that growing peanuts, while good for the soil, was not profitable.
Carver revolutionized the southern agricultural economy by showing that 300 products could be derived from the peanut. By 1938, peanuts had become a $200 million industry and a chief product of Alabama.
