your body breaks down energy in this order 1. carbs 2. stored fat 3. protein (muscle) if you are doing cardio and limiting the amount of carbs and fats (limiting not eliminating) (non-saturated fats are better than saturated) then you will burn your fat since the carbs will burn off...you'll have to up your protein by adding more LEAN meats (chicken breast, fish) also....eat smaller portions more often (6-8 SMALL meals a day) to keep your metabolism working, focus on not letting yourself feel hungry......the odds are that whats preventing your weight loss is diet, simple changes in diet that you stick to can make drastic changes in weight loss

That depends on what you're doing to lose weight. It's possible to lose both. Typically, if you're starting to become active after being inactive, you gain muscle and lose fat. If you're just plain cutting calories without exercising, you will lose muscle that way. The body is an efficient machine and will draw an all sources necessary to sustain itself. This is why starvation diets, and most diets for that matter, aren't healthy and most often are counterproductive.

You need cardio AND strength. DO NOT DRINK ALCHOHAL! DO NOT EAT DINNER WITHIN FIVE HOURS OF SLEEP. Cardio will work the calories AND prepare our body for muscle growth/definition. Fat reserves are produced by late/binge/giant portion eating. Your body assumes you're anticipating a fast (like a bear hibernating) and will store those reserves wherever your genetic code thinks it best for your body type.
