I am unemployed and have no insurance. I had an acute appendix attack and had to have emergency surgery in Las Vegas.

Hi,

Before you think about the government paying your bills, consider your own personal options first.

Do you have any money in savings? Hospitals will also accept major credit cards so you could pay it off when you get a job. Do you have any relatives that would help you out? How about friends? Do you belong to a church?

Hospitals are generally willing to work out payment schedules with you so you can pay a smaller amount monthly over a longer period of time until it's paid off. Communicate with their billing department so they see you are at least making an effort to pay your bill.

When people do not pay their own bills, that eventually falls back on the general public to pay it through taxes. If the hospital has to write that off, that contributes to rising costs, resulting in making health care all that much more expensive for everybody else.

Good luck. You will feel better about yourself once you have paid that off. When you are back on your feet again, you should look into getting health insurance so you will have peace of mind for the future. Most employers will offer health insurance for you right away or after you have been there for a short while. In fact, if you had coverage through your previous employer, you are automatically eligible for cobra coverage until you get a new health insurance plan. I think that will cover you for 6 months.

Wishes for a speedy recovery.
