For a big mall, Horton Plaza downtown is pretty all-inclusive, and also a very nice architecture.

For something more interesting, I'd head to Ocean Beach, and window-ship Newport Avenue. There are VERY good deals to be found. A discount hair care store, nice little clothing shops, antique stores, discount furniture, and lots more. ALSO, it has the South Beach bar and grill for when you're too tired to keep shopping. Stop in for the mahi tacos - best fish tacos anywhere!
