dictionary.com has a translator function, but I don't know if it is effective for Japanese. There are also handheld electronic translators. My son got one on eBay. The same son learned Japanese by taking it in high school and college. He is currently teaching English in Asia, so his choice actually led to a job.

You can also get your feet wet by purchasing foreign language cd's at a bookstore. Try looking for Rosetta, Pimsleur, or Berlitz.

I am looking to learn too. I bought a Japanese Dictionary and picking up simple words from watching Japanese shows with subtitles. The best way and easiest way to learn would be to actually live there. That is how I learned English. Here is a language program that is free:

Honestly! The best way to learn Japanese is from a Japanese person,I learned my Japanese from a japanese friend,so in just my opinion those materials are a waste of time,I say this because if you can find a good teacher then he will teach you correct pronunciation.Good Luck and enjoy learning Nihongo.
