Well...these are just some of the things I know about them...
•Jinns were made by Allah. They were made in the form of ‘smokeless fire’ just as we humans are made of clay.
•They lived on the earth long before us humans came
•Even today there are Jinns - However, we can’t see them; they are invisible to the naked eye. Though they can see us!
•Jinns are known to have a fiery nature
•Jinns have the ability to transform into animals and people.
•They have a world of their own, they have families, their own religion ect.
•Jinns are often found in found in places like the desert, graveyard and even the bathroom!
•Jinns can enter your minds if they want to (usually bad ones!) and make you see and hear things. ( no not schizophrenia)
•They eat bones – though I’ve read that they just sniff the bones and that’s it- they've eaten!
•Their animals eat dung
•Jinns have free will like we do
•They will be judged on Judgement day alongside humans
•Bad Jinns could :
1)Try to lead you astray and away from your religion
2)Try to scare you
3)Possess you in very extreme cases
* They usually do this because
1)You did something to upset them ( like accidentally killing a snake which happened to be someone from their Jinn family)
2)They love you! ( so they stay with you all the time or scare you as they like to tease you)
3)They’re jealous ( they want to show that they are in control and not some human being)
•Good Jinns
1)Might be with you all the time
2)Might live in you house (usually they’re muslim)
* They usually do this because
1)They like you!
2)They simply see your house as their house as well
•Whilst Jinns have powers that we don’t, Islam says that us humans are in fact powerful than the Jinn, and we can tackle them if we act in the right way ( though I don’t know what that way is)
•Jinns can travel faster than us…like in a flash of second they can be in one country to another!
•The prophet actually said that every human being is accompanied by a Jinn. They try to lead us astray so you should pray to Allah for guidance to keep you on the right path.
•Oh yeah – Jinns live much longer than us, like they can live up to 1000
p.s- whilst they are invisible to us, people have claimed to see them, i guess thats because Jinns can decide to come to our side of the world if they want to..and can reveal themselves.....

There is a co-exsisting world with ours as you said. This world is made of lights and colours. We term it the astral world.
There are many form of astral beings, some positive and some negative. Positive beings are those who will help us in realizing God. They help us in our difficult times. Examples would be angels, departed saints etc.
Negative beings will not assist you in realizing God. They will help you in achieving whatever your hearts desire, good or bad, provided you do what is necessary for them. Examples are Jinns, demons, souls of people who die prematurely or those who committed heinous crimes during their lifetime etc.

They are beings on another plane of existence, they can sometimes cross over to ours, they're not supposed to be able to harm us directly, but they can have an influence on our thoughts making us harm ourselves. I know of something called "Ifrit", this is a jinn that makes you trust them and one day it will let you down when you really need its help. As far as how true all of this is I guess we'll never now...

Islam took the Holy Spirit of Christianity and transformed it into devious spirits called Jinns.
However, if you honestly want to learn for yourself, I've included this link in the source section to a Islam website which explains jinns and their role in the Quran. I stand by the above answer because Islam states that there is no God but Allah and Muhammad is his Prophet. To force Christians to convert to Islam, the Holy Spirit had to be replaced by evil doing spirits.
