Anyone that would trade your friend money for the pet, probably will not take care of it. Think about the pet. they will probably abuse it or fight it. Unless they know someone that really wants that type of dog and is willing to pay for it. That is a sad story.

As far as if selling the pet is an ok thing to do, I agree with what Amanda S. said. The rest is just general advice. We do volunteer work for our local animal rescue group, fostering and other things. One of the things our organization does is help pet owners who are in financial need. If the person really loves the pet and the only problem is financial (no abuse, etc.) our group and a LOT of others would rather help the pet owner than see another homeless animal. Have your friend contact any and all animal groups like this. I would try all of them from the ASPCA and Humane Society, and small groups like us. We live in Indiana, the southwest part, if your friend does too, have him or her email me, and we will help all we can. Just this past month our group has helped a family that had a German Shepard with severe skin problems that required expensive treatments, helped an elderly lady pay to spay/neuter some cats someone dumped at her house, etc. Just please make sure a responsible, loving person gets the pet if your friend can not keep the pet. GOOD LUCK!

Yes actually it may be the kindest, most loving thing tio do if as you said the owner can not take good care of it and does not have money even for food for the pet. It would be heartbreaking but it may very well be the best decision.

I know this is a cat question but I want to tell you about Reno. I think that will help you understand why I said it can be the best choice. Reno is a Dobbie (Doberman) who belonged to a young woman who became homeless (also a sad story). For a while she and Reno lived in her car. Neither of them had enough to eat and it was cold. She couldn't go to a homeless shelter because they would not allow Renbo to be there. Finally she gave Reno to a lady who trains dogs. By then he had Rickets from malnutrition and was not well in otherways. Today Reno is a national champion dancing dog and is also a reading assistance dog. He has a good home where he has plenty of food and he is a local celebrety. He's been on TV and on the front page of the paper. His former owner gets to see him sometimes and to know how he is. She is now living on property her folks own and doing a little better too.

Selling a pet should not be a solution unless you are a professional breeder. But most definitely find a good home if unable to take care of it.

In a lot countries they don't even buy pet food for their pets because they cant afford it. I know a few people that never bought their pets actual pet food, they gave their dog cooked white rice and plain boiled chicken. The dogs looked pretty healthy to me, and those are the natural foods that come in most pet food.

I've heard of people only feeding their cats and dogs foods that can be consumed by humans but prepared in a way that is safe and healthy. So whatever your friend is eating their pet may be able to eat as well so long that it is safe. Although, I would have them verify that from a professional source.

I don't think any pet owners should just trade their pets for money. The way I look at it is once you buy a pet it is basically a part of the family. Pets grow to be just as attached to their owners as a baby is to their mothers. I think if you do not see providing for a pet in your budget you should put the brakes on and maybe reconsider the idea when you are little more financially stable. There is really no difference in taking responsibility in a pet and taking responsibility for a child. Both are living, breathing things that have feelings just like you and me. It just isn't fair to the pet.

That depends I guess. If it is a bred dog and they sell it to good owners who normally pay for their pets, then I guess as long as the dog/cat etc is OK. That is sad -- it isn't that expensive to keep most pets, but I know that is easy for me to say since I am not that broke. And I did just pay massive bills for my senior cat's hospital care, so that stuff does come up. Do they have family members or friends who also love animals and can provide the food they need to survive?

If the pet owner sells the pet to a responsible person that will care for the animal properly, then I don't see a problem with it. It would be better to sell the pets to someone who can care for it and feed it properly, than to neglect the animal. Some people down on their luck just abandon their pets in the country or in the alley and the animals are left to their own devices.

If the animal is in need then the owner can bring it to a family member or a shelter until the owner gets back on their feet. I don't think it is fair to the dog to be sold off because the owner can't afford food. Dogs love unconditionally and it would be sad if it had to be sold for such a petty reason. I would only agree with selling a dog if it was a last resort and the dog's life would be in danger.

Contact the local chapter of the ASPCA or the nearest pet shelter. They will help you out. If you really love your "pet", (and I hate that word...I don't have pets here...they are fellow travelers and companions on the planet Earth) why would you want to sell a friend?

Shouldn't necessarily trade money for the pet, but at least find a new home for it so it can survive.... this also eliminates the need to purchase food for the poor thing.
