Very good car. I have a friend with a 1993, with the 4.6L (same engine) and he has 315 000km on it, and the only problem was a siezed tentioner pulley causign a broken belt, and worn spider gears in the differential. Both were caused by extreme wear as a former police car (bought with all maintance and repair papers). I work in a garage and I see many of these cars come in as a "fleet" vehicle, and I constantly see them in for maintance at 350 000km - 500 000km. I've seen a few at over 600 000km and i've seen one at 760 000km. They are cars that seem to last forever, or as long as you maintain it. If i buy a car, I'm a truck guy, i would buy a Crown Victoria/Grand Marquies.
The 4.6L is a very reliable engine, and I see very few problmes with them. I have a Ranger and I'm doing a 302 swap (5L) and the only reason why i'm not doing a 4.6L swap is because of the space issue (it is possible, but very tight and not recomend completly for a daily driver). If space wasn't an issue I would ahve a 4.6L in there right now.
There have been 7 Crown Victorias in my family with the 4.6L and countless Vicky's with the 5L (old squaired style). They have all held up very well, and they are put through extreme abuse. Theres a reason why they are used as police cars. They can stand up to abuse, and are relitivly "simple" to repair.

Like any other car, you never know how reliable it can be. Everyone says Ford is a junk car, I disagree 100%. I've been around a few Crown Vics. mostly the ones with the police package, so yeah supercharged! Bad *** car right there!
Remember, some time or another a car will need maintenance, what you do STAY away from buying parts from Ford look online for part suppliers and befriend them, or better yet have a friend who is a mechanic to help you wtih maintenance.

Crown Victoria is known for govn't cars. Most of the police department in California uses Crown VIctoria.
I do not have a Crown Victoria, however I had a chance to drive on 2002 model as a rental car in the past.
It is a very large car with power.
Although this heavy car has only 200 horse power (compare to the weight!!), it seemed to deliver more power than other 200 hp cars.
For example, i had a 96 Nissan Maxima with 190 horse power. the Crown Victoria seemed to have A LOT more H.P. than maxima. I guess that's probably the difference between V6 and V8.
but be aware of the braking though.
because of the heavy weight, you will need more distance than any other passenger cars.

Having worked at a parts counter for a Ford dealership - the answer is no. The car starts falling apart - tie rods, control arms, especially if you have a former taxi or police car.
If you're driving a taxi and make good money, the car will still keep going except you would spend a lot of money on maintenance and repairs.

If its not a police car, I would buy one. Crown Victoria/Grand Marquis are generally driven by older people, taken care of. They are reliable, easy to service, and get close to 30 mpg on straight highway.

I agree with most people.. they are great cars that hold up really well unless you play Roscoe P. Coltraine (from the Dukes of Hazzard) and make a habit of jumping curbs and hills....
If I bought a police edition, Id buy from a state agency with the appearance package as those cars are taken care of way better than the state police (due to having to catch speeders) or espcially local police (due to the Dukes Of Hazzard mentality some of them have)

i own a repair shop, and that actually is a real nice car to have, you cant beat the ride of it and the comfort is really good,we took one on trip ,and it done spectacular,it doesn't wear you out to drive it either, and on the road the mileage was fairly good, but the ride and the safety was what we was after, when we went, and we got our moneys worth from it,they really are an excellent car,and they don't seem to give a lot of problems either, there's nothing i can tell you other than to look it over real good, and make sure it has no major defects in it good luck i hope this help,s.

Yes they are. Most police cars are CV's. They aren't race cars but they hold their own. Fairly roomy, and the price is usually right. Good luck

Any used Ford sucks, if you want a large used car then I would consider a used Toyota Avalon or Honda Accord
