getting windows has encounterd a problem message?

can anyone help everytime i try to go in my external hard drive i get the windows has encounterd a problem message then it throws me out of the hard drive so i cant get in the hard drive does anyone know how i can fix this

try using the add new hardware program. it may not know the drive is there. you'll need the external installation disk when it calls for it.
